THE MAKING OF AN ICON

The creation of an espadrille tells a story of authenticity, where timelessness and craftsmanship are its essence. Discover how the manufacture of the espadrille has hardly changed over the last 90 years.

1. WADDING

We traveled through India and Bangladesh to discover the best quality jute. The production of 100% natural jute skeins and their subsequent dyeing. It is the beginning of this adventure, the basis for making the soles of all models.

2. BRAIDING

Castañer's heritage, its legacy, always present. The jute braiding machines are the same ones that were invented in the Castañer atelier almost a hundred years ago.

They are responsible for a unique and artisanal braiding technique.

3. URDIDO

The espadrille reveals its iconic shape. The sole is worked on a wheel-shaped table that serves as a mold for the jute braid. This shape is the origin of the original espadrille.

4. STITCHING OF THE SOLE

There is only one machine in the world that sews the jute braid in this way. It was invented and created by Tomas Serra, mechanic and co-founder of the brand. Today, it is still one of the great treasures of this atelier.

5. VULCANIZED

The die of each rubber band differs according to the model or number. Later, the die is glued to the sole to make it more consistent. Espadrilles that are part of the history of many summers.

6. VULCANIZED

Always in search of the highest quality. The vulcanization process fixes perfectly and without any fissure, the braided sole and the die-cut rubber, through molds exposed to temperatures of 150º.

7. HEEL PAD

Details that inspire style, simplicity and class. The heel counter is a unique detail in the most iconic models. Made with linen and cotton yarns of the highest quality, in old looms of 1900 full of history.

8. STITCHING

Artisan hands and all the craftsmanship in the world. Today, many of the models are still sewn by hand as they were 90 years ago.
