THE MAKING OF AN ICON

THE CREATION OF AN ESPADRILLE IS A STORY OF AUTHENTICITY, WHERE TIMELESSNESS AND CRAFTSMANSHIP ARE ITS ESSENCE. DISCOVER HOW THE MANUFACTURE OF THE ESPADRILLE HAS HARDLY CHANGED OVER THE PAST 90 YEARS.

1. HANK

WE TOUR INDIA AND BANGLADESH TO DISCOVER THE BEST QUALITY JUTE. THE PREPARATION OF SKINS OF 100% NATURAL JUTE AND THEIR SUBSEQUENT DYEING. IT IS THE BEGINNING OF THIS ADVENTURE, THE BASIS FOR MANUFACTURING THE SOLES OF ALL THE MODELS.

2. BRAIDING

CASTAÑER'S HERITAGE, HIS LEGACY, ALWAYS PRESENT. THE JUTE BRAIDING MACHINES ARE THE SAME ONE THAT WERE INVENTED IN THE CASTAÑER ATELIER ALMOST ONE HUNDRED YEARS AGO.

THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR A UNIQUE AND HANDMADE BRAIDING TECHNIQUE.

3. WARPED

THE ESPADRILLE REVEALS ITS ICONIC SHAPE. THE SOLE IS WORKED ON A WHEEL-SHAPED TABLE THAT SERVES AS A MOLD FOR THE JUTE BRAID. THIS SHAPE IS THE ORIGIN OF THE ORIGINAL ESPADRILLE.

4. SOLE STITCHING

THERE IS ONLY ONE MACHINE IN THE WORLD THAT SEWS JUTE BRAIDE LIKE THIS. IT WAS DESIGNED AND CREATED BY TOMÁS SERRA, MECHANIC AND CO-FOUNDER OF THE BRAND. TODAY, IT IS STILL ONE OF THE GREAT TREASURES OF THIS ATELIER.

5. TROQUELING

THE DIE-CUT OF EACH RUBBER DIFFERS ACCORDING TO THE MODEL OR THE NUMBER. LATER, THE DIE-CUT IS GLUED TO THE SOLE TO MAKE IT MORE CONSISTENT. THE DIE IS THEN GLUED TO THE SOLE TO MAKE IT MORE CONSISTENT.

6. VULCANIZING

ALWAYS IN SEARCH OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY. THE VULCANIZATION PROCESS FIXES THE BRAIDED SOLE AND THE DIE-CUT RUBBER PERFECTLY AND WITHOUT ANY FISSURE, THROUGH MOLDS EXPOSED TO TEMPERATURES OF 150º.

7. HEEL PAD

DETAILS THAT INSPIRE STYLE, SIMPLICITY AND CLASS. THE HEEL COUNTER IS A UNIQUE DETAIL IN THE MOST ICONIC MODELS. MADE WITH LINEN AND COTTON YARNS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY, ON ANTIQUE LOOMS OF 1900 FULL OF HISTORY.

8. SEWING

ARTISAN HANDS AND ALL THE TRADE IN THE WORLD. TODAY, MANY OF THE MODELS ARE STILL SEWN BY HAND AS THEY WERE DONE 90 YEARS AGO.
